ALAIOR

Introduction and brief historical overview of the city of Alaior

Alaior is the third most populous town on the island. Alaior is an artisan and industrial community, with 7,000 inhabitants and a municipal area of 107.20 square kilometers. It has a large number of archaeological sites, which makes the antiquity of human occupation evident. As a town, it was ordered to be founded by King James II of Mallorca in the year 1304 with the purchase of the Ihalor estate, from which the current name derives. However, the existence of the parish of Santa Eulàlia (now the patron saint of the town) is earlier, as it is mentioned in the census of 1303. In 1439, when Galcerán de Requesens dictated the arbitration award on the municipal organization of Menorca, Alaior obtained its own University, understood as a local government institution and therefore the historical antecedent of the current city council. By Royal Decree of July 20, 1926, it was granted the title of city.
