Natural areas of Es Mercadal

Almost the entire coastline of the municipality of Es Mercadal—except for the urbanized centers—has a special classification as a natural area protected by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. This is a good example of the diversity of its flora and fauna, as well as the high ecological values of the area, which constitute a great attraction for lovers of nature in its purest state, excursions on foot or horseback, outdoor activities, and the tranquility of virgin beaches.

Crowned by a lighthouse, the Cap de Cavalleria offers, with its cliffs of up to 90 meters in height, an impressive aspect, especially on days when the sea is rough. The area is surrounded by complexes of architectural and archaeological interest and is a frequent nesting place for seabirds and migratory birds such as the seagull, the Egyptian vulture, or the peregrine falcon. In the middle of this arid and rocky landscape, endemisms such as the socarrell (thorny scrub) and aromatic plants such as chamomile bloom. In its immediate vicinity is the solitary island "des Porros" and non-urbanized beaches like Cavalleria and Cala Viola, formed by three small coves. And, continuing towards the west, there are two more virgin beaches: Binimel·là and Cala Pregonda. Access to the latter cove must be done by sea or on foot from the marshland of coarse, red sand surrounded by pine and juniper forests. One of the most unique habitats is formed by the wetland of the Binidonairet meadow (south of Cala Tirant), which becomes flooded during the winter and becomes a privileged spot for the observation of aquatic birds. Also protected natural areas of Es Mercadal are the Bay of Fornells, whose coasts form an interesting ecosystem, and the pine forest areas, of great beauty, that extend from El Toro towards the Northwest.
