Introduction to Mercadal

This Menorcan district is the second largest, with an area of 134 square km. Bordered to the East by Alaior, to the South by Es Migjorn Gran, and to the West by Ferreries; most of its nearly 2,400 inhabitants are concentrated in its center, at the foot of Monte Toro, and in Fornells. A large part of the territory is declared a protected natural area by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands thanks to its unique ecological values and the richness of its archaeological heritage. The coastline has two natural ports, that of Fornells, where the artisanal fishing fleet is based, and Addaia, which developed intense commercial activity during the first centuries of our era. On the north coast, there are also modern tourist centers, such as Son Parc, Arenal d'en Castell, or Playas de Fornells; and unspoiled coves like Binimel.là or Cavalleria, at the northernmost point of the island. Surrounded by rural estates, the town of Mercadal, for centuries, had its main source of income from agriculture and livestock, in addition to significant commercial and artisanal activity. Currently, Mercadal has recognized prestige for its gastronomy and pastries, as well as for the manufacture of the typical "avarcas" (Menorcan sandals). Among the rich folklore of the region, linked to the traditions of rural society, its patron saint festivals stand out, which are celebrated in the month of July.
